Description:

Two Connecticut Federal side chairs, c. 1790, cherry, back seat rails numbered VI and VIII, pierced splats with carved volutes and urn decoration, straight legs with stretcher bars, slip seats, number I on one seat frame. One chair with quarter round corner blocks has a crack to splat, both chairs with reset shoes under splats, one chair with replaced blocks, one of these blocks stamped "J.W. Mitchell", overall wear consistent with age, 37 1/2" h. x 20 1/2" w. x 17 1/2" d. [VERBAL PROVENANCE: Twelve chairs believed originally owned by Deacon Timothy Stanley of Farmington, CT (August 13, 1727 - 1817), which were later split among his descendants, these two chairs "VI" and "VIII" believed passed down the Stanley line until 2007. Specific family names in descent available by request.]
