Two early 19th C. miniature samplers: an 1807 English sampler, silk on very fine, sheer linen, consists of two lines of the alphabet, along with the number 12, over a motto: "Seek Virtue and of that/ possest / Henceforth to God resign /the rest "; at bottom "E. Surman 1807" and a small stem of flowers, worked in cross stitch, thread colors are cream, tan, black, and dark green, modern black mat board and frame, black frame with gold edging on inside and outside edges, good condition with obvious vertical fold line down the center, sight size: 3 1/2" h. x 3 3/8" w.; frame: 6 5/8" h. x 6 5/8" w.; along with an early 19th C. sampler, silk on wool, mounted on another unidentified fabric, consists of a cross-stitched alphabet on three lines, numbers 1 thru 10 on the fourth line, worked in light brown silk thread, surrounded by a zig-zag border in brown silk thread, matted and framed in dark painted wood frame, fair condition with insect damage to wool fabric, sight size: 1 5/8" h. x 2 1/2" w.; frame: 3 1/2" h. x 4 1/2" w., neither examined out of frame.
