Unusual 18th C. American candle stand, c. 1730, maple, two-part standard with tapered rectangular slide secured by two later pewter collars, tripod base with turned legs, some splitting to standard, replaced two-light sconce arm, approximately 21" h. [Antiques collector, furniture restorer, and author Henry Hammond Taylor (Connecticut, 1878-1933) kept a detailed journal recording where and when he purchased early American antiques. He noted that this piece "was found in Long Hill in a foreigners [sic] home and was painted black." Prior to his death, Taylor bequeathed items in his collection to descendants.][The Taylor Collection]
