Willard L. Sears (Connecticut, 1814-?), oil on board, 1840, portrait of an older gentleman in black coat and white cravat, sitter looks at viewer with a stern gaze, neatly signed with location (New Haven) and dated on original backing board verso, not examined out of frame, wear consistent with age, including minor areas of paint loss, etc., framed: 23 1/4" h. x 29 1/4" w. [Note: Willard L. Sears is listed in Patten's Directory 1842-3 & Lee New Haven City Directory as being a house and sign painter and was a part of the local fire department. He was the father of famed Western landscape painter Benjamin Willard Sears (1846-1905).]
