William Henry Howe (American, 1846-1929), oil on canvas, "5 of Spades", depicting large black and white cow standing in grassy meadow, bears name plaque and title, signed "Wm. H. Howe" LL, behind glass, stretcher signed in pen verso, stretcher bar signed in worn light-colored paint verso, elaborate gilt frame, some craquelure to frame, ss: 14" h. x 16" w. [Howe joined the artist's gallery in Old Lyme, CT at the invitation of fellow painter Henry Ward Ranger (American, 1858-1916). While sojourning at Florence Griswold's house in the early 20th C., Howe painted one of his celebrated bovine scenes on the cabinet doors located in his hostess' parlor. Howe was so closely associated with cattle--one of his favorite subject matters--that he was sometimes affectionately referred to as "Mr. Howe Cow"].
