Fine jewelry passed down through a Philadelphia family, as well as important 20th C. photography and furnishings, an eclectic mix of silver, Asian items, etc. gathered from estates and fine homes in Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New York. will cross the block on December 4th at Winter Associates in Plainville, CT.

An impressive collection of jewelry handed down through a prominent Philadelphia family, the second portion of a jewelry group that included $66,000 earrings sold at Winter Associates’ October 3rd auction, will be available. It includes a memorable antique pheasant brooch of 18K gold and platinum, set with a ruby, demantoid garnets, and boasting 140 diamonds with a combined weight of 2.56 cts. There is a nice selection of pieces from J. E. Caldwell, a Philadelphia firm known for its high quality design and unusual gemstones. The J.E. Caldwell firm was started in 1939 by silversmith James Emmott Caldwell, and since then has provided high style jewelry, silver and objets d’art, creating many fine examples of Art Nouveau and Art Deco jewelry for which it is still known.[1] Caldwell pieces featured in the December 4th sale will include an 18K and platinum diamond band, an Edwardian diamond bow brooch with articulated ribbon strands, emerald and diamond earrings, sapphire and diamond bow brooch and earrings, and two bar pins. Other jewelry featured will be a diamond watch pendant, an Art Deco garnet and diamond platinum bracelet, Lady’s 14K Rolex oyster perpetual wristwatch, Edwardian jade and diamond platinum ring, gold including charm bracelets and pocket watches (one an 18K Tiffany). Fashion conscious buyers will also be tempted by Louis Vuitton, Mark Cross, Gucci and Judith Lieber suitcases and handbags in the sale.

Silver gelatin prints by 20th C. icons Ansel Adams, Edward Weston and John Sexton are from two photographers’ estates. Important landscapes to be offered are Ansel Adams "Half Dome, Merced River, Winter", "Dunes, Hazy Sun, White Sands National Monument " and “Ferns”, and another iconic work, Edward Weston’s “Nautilus”. Additional images here from the estate of Fluxus group member, Steve Balkin, include his silver gelatin prints of his Fluxus friends such as Andy Warhol and Al Hansen as well as three images of Robert Indiana supervising the 1966 installation of his “LOVE” sculpture on Fifth Avenue, NYC. Also part of Balkin’s collection are two rare Peter Beard prints, "Elephant (Buy an Elephant a Drink, Tsavo Park, Athi River, Kenya)" and “Croc”, both with provoking imagery of ill-fated animals during Tsavo Park’s ecological disaster of the late 1960’s. A good selection of better cameras will also be sold.

From Connecticut estates, a number of Mid-Century Modern furniture pieces by T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings for Widdicomb (including sofa and three side chairs), six “Aluminum Group” armchairs by Charles & Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen for Knoll "Tulip" armchair and matching swivel stool, Edward Wormley for Drexel cocktail table, etc. which pairs nicely with Modern and Contemporary artwork by Georg Grosz, Picasso, Jules Pascin, Robert Indiana, Miro, Charles Hinman, etc.
