June 30th, 2025, Auction - Press Release

A vivid watercolor by Paul Jenkins will be a highlight in Winter Associates’ June 30th sale. One of many strong Contemporary artworks from a Bloomfield estate, the work is notable for its large size and wash of color flowing diagonally through the composition. “King Corpse”, a 1986 screenprint by Sam Lewis Francis also exhibits the freedom of Abstract Expressionism in brightly colored hues on a large scale.  Other works from the estate include prints by Alexander Calder and Frank Stella, along with a smaller 3-D Pop-Art work by Charles Fazzino from a private consigner.  Furnishings and sculptures round out the Modern side of the sale with a pair of leather armchairs and matching ottomans designed by Vladimir Kagan for Directional, featuring dramatic wing-inspired headrests.  Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte table lamp and four Milo Baughman inspired swivel chairs in orange suede with brass wrapped bases will also be offered.  Antonio Prats Ventos, a painter and sculptor from the Dominican Republic, carved many of his “abstract organic” 3-D artworks from exotic woods, with four such examples in the sale ranging from sixty-seven to twenty-seven inches in height.

Early books and Maps from fine Connecticut Estates in Glastonbury and Meriden will interest collectors, with numerous volumes centered on the Americas, East & West Indies, Bermuda and other islands along with 18th C. French nautical charts, maps of the Caribbean, New York, New England, etc.  A first edition 19th C. bible translated by Julia Evelina Smith (1792 – 1886) will be offered. Smith, a Glastonbury (Connecticut) suffragette who studied Greek, Latin and Hebrew, was the first woman to complete the hefty translation task, taking eight years to do so and another twenty-one to publish. This bible also has notable exhibition provenance; it was at the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of American History exhibition "1876: A Centennial Exhibition", which ran from 1985 to 1990; letters of correspondence and loan agreements, etc. will accompany the book.

There is a mixed assortment of interesting Chinese and Japanese offerings, one ornately carved dragon form ivory tusk has an open mouth and flame-form tail measuring an impressive 31” in length. A large closely matched pair of tusks are mounted onto Lucite plinth bases for a Modern look.  A gilt lacquered bronze of a Chinese warrior, carved ivory figures, rosewood floor screen, large cloisonné, porcelain and cinnabar vases, hardstone carved figures and bowls, woodblocks, scrolls and other hand-painted art will also cross the block.

Early American furniture and accessories include a New York chest on chest c. 1770, early blanket and storage chests, quilts, 19th C. portraits and landscapes. Classical Revival furnishings include an impressive 93” high display cabinet and chests on stand; there is also Continental porcelain by Herend, Dresden, Meissen etc.

Fine jewelry including a Triple strand cultured pearl necklace with 18K diamond separator, 18K earrings, brooch and Baume & Mercier wristwatch, Southwest silver such as bolos, squash blossom, cuffs, etc. as well as sterling silver flatware sets “Chippendale” by Towle (84 pcs) and “Royal Danish” by International Silver (81 pcs) will round out the eclectic sale.
