High quality Continental offerings include a striking and realistically rendered three-quarter portrait of a young woman by French painter Auguste Toulmouche (1829 - 1890). The young woman is slightly turned away from the viewer, caught admiring a new jewel. Painted by the acclaimed artist at the later part of the 19th C., the work is an excellent example of the artist’s devotion to “richly clad women set against the backdrop of luxurious interiors”[i] and particularly the exquisite execution of folds of satin and velvet, as seen in the portrait’s lustered and voluminous cornflower blue skirt. Fifty-four miniature portraits, many featuring Continental subjects, compliment the many objet d’art in the sale, including Viennese and Russian enamels.
